Tuesday, Nov 6, 2012- Update 1

Good evening HCTA members,

Here is our update for today. Please remember that some situations are fluid and things change.

*Army Corps: Today the Army Corps brought in 25,000 cubic yards of sand to shore up the flatter beaches from Middlesex to Bergen Ave in anticipation of the coming Nor’easter.

*Access to HC: Mayor Oldham is working to get the restrictions removed from our end of the Island once the new storm has passed and damage assessments have been made. He said the placards will presently give HC homeowners/taxpayers access from 7am to 6pm to our zone only. The curfew is still in effect for those staying on the Island.

*Volunteering to help HC: We expect to have a volunteer opportunity this coming weekend-most likely on Saturday. Mayor Oldham has said the biggest help would be:

1. those that have pickup trucks teaming with 1-3 others and collecting trash off the streets and driving it/unloading it into the three dumpsters placed in town.(The Shellfish Co, the HC Marina and by Sunset Park.) There was a trash pickup today. It would NOT include at this point, large items like sofas, mattresses, appliances. But smaller items such as wood, trash and junk that could be blown around or float around in a heavy rain.

2. Volunteers helping others that are incapacitated or in some way unable to clean up their own yards and streets.

We are in the process of formulating plans after the Nor’easter passes and will inform you of all details late in the week. The HCTA will designate a central meeting place and divide volunteers into teams with assignments. Supplies anticipated to be needed for volunteers to bring would be construction type garbage bags, rakes, shovels and a sense of humor, etc.

Your response to assist our town is heartwarming. Our police and volunteer firefighters have worked round the clock to clean up HC before owners where approved to return by the Island Emergency Management Team. We need to step up and assist them. Thank you and stay tuned for more info!

FYI- Holgate: Em Mgmnt personnel expect Holgate to be opened to homeowners on Friday- again depending on the damage assessment from the coming storm.

Have a good night folks.
