Keeping Harvey Cedars Taxpayers Informed!

HCTA Boulevard Safety Information

Everyone agrees road safety is important. At several meetings, the Harvey Cedars Taxpayer Association (HCTA) has discussed the safety of bicyclists and pedestrians, who bike, walk and run along the Boulevard in our town. To improve safety, Boulevard changes have been proposed by the County Engineer, adopted by the Borough of Harvey Cedars and endorsed by the HCTA. Check out our Boulevard Safety Information Flyer to learn more.

The biggest issue I observe up and down the boulevard on the island are kids riding their bikes, without helmets, and on the wrong side of the street, and/or worse, up on the sidewalk. At least in HC, whether you are a supporter of 3 lanes of traffic or 4, there is a shoulder to help deal with this on some level. In the business districts throughout the island, peoples lives are endangered by this activity. It is only a matter of time before someone gets killed as a result. We hold out the possibility of fines, community service, points on your license, etc., etc. for these pedestrian related “safety issues” mentioned in the brochure, but provide no teeth to the regulation that says you must ride your bike on the correct side of the street and wear a helmet. Nor do we mention that our various police organizations, who show up three and four at a time at every traffic stop, have been tasked with doing anything about this particular problem. Makes no sense to me.

I have 5 grandchildren and am very concerned by the width of the bike lanes in Harvey Cedars. I am a homeowner for 25 years and think its about time to correct this situation.

Think about downloading, printing and posting this flyer somewhere in your house where it will be read – especially if you rent.
